TORONTO -- The Chicago Blackhawks are sending forward Kris Versteeg to Toronto in a five-player deal.

He had 44 points in 79 regular-season games last season.

Versteeg added 14 points in the post-season for the Stanley Cup champions.

The Maple Leafs give up forwards Viktor Stalberg, Chris DiDomenico and Philippe Paradis in the deal.

Toronto also gets the rights to left-winger Bill Sweatt.

Versteeg To Leafs

Oilers in the news and Leafs tidbit.

Moreau has been picked up by the Columbus Blue Jackets. This is a nice fit for both sides.

Edmonton trade Pat O'Sullivan to Phoenex for Jim Vandermer.

Is souray heading to St.Louis ?? Could be a trade in place for souray / brewer swap.

Look for Nillson to be moved tody as well.

Waiver Wire....
- Tom Preissing (COL), Jay Pandolfo, Andrew Peters (NJ), Petteri Nokelainen (PHX) and Nigel Dawes (CGY) are on unconditional waivers. They're eligible to be bought out if they clear.

There could be big offer sheet coming, and one may be heading to anahiem for bobby ryan. However there is talk that Toronto may swoop in and trade for the winger before they recieve an offer sheet.

Bobby Ryan and the Ducks seem to be far apart on a new deal.

Keeping my ear to the ground!!

More to come...

Leafs News

Here are a few rumblings in Leaf Land :

Today, Mark Spector on Sportsnet posted the following. "Moreau, who can still be a useful third-line winger on a team like Los Angeles — where GM Dean Lombardi is wrestling with the decision of surrendering Wayne Simmonds for Tomas Kaberle — was no small decision." ( HockeyBuzz )

Kaberle Rumors are all over the internet. I do believe he will be moved for a top six forward. Names I have read are Jeff Carter, Mike Ribero , Jordan Stall , Dustin Brown, Brad Richards and the whole Chicago Blackhawk team.

Personally I believe the perfect trade partners would be Dallas, Pittsburgh , and Philly. Which would mean deals would be centered aroud Ribero / Richards , Stall, o Carter.

My Fav .... Pittsburgh, Stall is buried on the team as a third line center. This Kid could break out on Toronto and could be a Burke target. Like I mentioned in the last post, word is Burke is waiting for the dust to settle on the Gonchar , Hamhuis front.

Look for the leafs in the Savard race. Savard has lifted his no trade clause to be moved to the Leafs or Sens. If Toronto makes a deal for Savard, rumor has it that Grabovski or Kulemin and prospect would go the other way. This would be considered a soft deal for the superstar. If Burke aquires Savard, I would think that Burke would look to aquire a winger for Kaberle.

Kovalchuck..... every leafs fans dream. I think Burke is putting up smoke screens here. I cant imagine Brian not wanting to get in the Kovalchuck sweepstakes. A bonafide 50 goal scorer in his prime. Who wouldnt be interested.

Burke has stated his need to get tougher... Enter Mike Brown who burke aquired from the Ducks at the draft. And he wants some quality grinders, some bottom 6 players.

Armstrong, Torres and Malholtra are available tommorow.

Armstrong has been long rumored to the leafs, and Burke offered a contract to Malholtra last year.

Kulemin and the Leafs are moving closer towards getting a contract signed. It is believed that Kulemin is looking for a 3 mil plus contract, Burke is looking 2.5 range.

Mitchell was not qualified, but could be brought back as a UFA for a cheaper contract becasue of the way arbitration works.

I will keep things updated as they happen. Look for more news and rumors through out the day. There should be buy outs, waiver pick ups , and hopefully a trade or two!!

Meowt!!

1st Rumor Blog - Free Agency Eve

Here is a collection of news and rumors for July 29th :

The off-season overhaul in Montreal continues as the team announced Tuesday that they have acquired forward Dustin Boyd, goaltender Dan Ellis and future considerations from the Nashville Predators in exchange for Sergei Kostitsyn and future considerations. ( tsn.ca )

Woikins Thought : Hate to say it, but this is a great move by Montreal, IF they can get a deal worked out with both RFA's.

According to Pierre Lebrun Pittsburgh continues talks with Hamhuis and Gonchar.

Woikins Thought: I cant imagine they will sign both D-men , they need wingers. Apparently Hamhuis who's right have been traded for twice now, will not make a decision until July 1st when all the offers are on the table. It is quite possible that the Pens dont get either deal done, and turn their sights to the Leafs and Kabele.

There is speculation that Brian Burke is actually waiting it out with Kaberle to see what happens when the dust settles in Pittsburgh.

Stall anyone????

TSN: Ethan Moreau, Robert Nilsson and Patrick O’Sullivan were all placed on waivers by the Edmonton Oilers with the purpose of buying out them out. Other players that have been placed on waivers are Nathan Oystric (Ana.), Todd Fedoruk (TB), Donald Brashear (NYR), Aaron Voros (NYR) and Patrick Rissmiller (NYR). Players who cleared waivers today and are now eligible to be bought out: Jonathan Cheechoo, Petteri Nokelainen, Ales Kotalik, Jim Vandermeer, and Ville Koistenen.

TSN: The Dallas Star will not be offering Mike Modano a contract for next season. Modano is an unrestricted free agent, but is still unsure if he will retire or not. They’d love to bring in back in a front office capacity

David Shoalts of the Globe and Mail: The Calgary Flames may also be interested in trading for Marc Savard. The Maple Leafs are rumored to be looking at free agents Dan Hamhuis and Zbynek Michalek, possibly exploring a trade for Jeff Carter before they move on to Marc Savard. Michalek may be more interested in heading to Ottawa to play with his brother. The Flames will buy out Alex Kotalik, and will cost them $1 million against the cap the for the next 4 years. If the Leafs were to deal for Savard, it probably wouldn’t happen until next week. The Leafs did not qualify John Mitchell

TSN: Brian Burke was on the Fan 590 radio station yesterday. Fan 590 Audio. The Leafs have some trade options but none involve Marc Savard. They have 4 offers for Kaberle but one is “a joke”. They are not going to trade him for the best offer, but one that gives them what they need, a top 6 forward.

Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: The Ottawa Senators have place Jonathan Cheechoo on waivers, with the purpose of buying him out. Cheechoo would then be a salary cap hit of $1.165 million over the next 2 seasons. The Sens are still negotiating with Andy Sutton and Matt Cullen. They would also like to add a forward and a Dman. Shean Donovan may end up going to Europe.

William DePaoli (InsidePittsburghSports.com) via Twitter: Colby Armstrong agent, Don Meehan, expects a stong market for his client, and is seeking a 4 year deal from a ‘hockey market’.

Woikins Thought: Hockey market?? What better market than the fishbowl of Toronto. Colby Armstrong has Blue and White written all over him, from what I have read I wouldn't be surprised to see him in a buds jersey.

I will post more rumors as events unfold through out the day... Plus my thoughts on Savard to Toronto rumors and the possibility of Kovalchuck dawning the leafs logo... Anyone else drooling??
