Well it has been a pro active few days in leafland. First the trade for Versteeg and Sweat, the signing of Colby Armstrong followed, and today the Leafs announce that they have resigned Kulemin and John Mitchell to respectable contracts.
Versteeg is a great pick up for Burke, and fits what he trying to do by bringing in young players who can play now. I think Vertseeg has prooven himself on a deep Chicago club wih limited ice time, their is potential for him to really flourish in top 6 minutes he will recieve in Toronto. He is a pesky forward with an offensive upside.
Sweat who came in the deal, from what I have read about him, could potentially make the team in the fall. He is a good two way forward but I feel as burke continues to tweak the roster over the next few weeks, he will probably be a marlie.
Armstrong was a given, he is the absolute perfect fit in Toronto. Young, tough, great open ice hitter, and a super pest. A friend of mine and I were discussing since Tucker we have not had this type of player, and that is why he is getting 3 mil. He can possibly sneak into the second line, but most likely a third line guy used in penalty kill sittuations.
Kulemin, was a must sign player for the Leafs, I remember Ron Wilson stating he is a train out there, and you can se it, he is always in on the puck, and tough on players. He really hits guys out there, and you can tell he doesnt bounce off guys, he hurts them. He can score, and I believe there is more to be seen with Kulemin. I like him, and he is a deal at just shy of 2.5 over two years, he gets a chance to prove he is worth the buck, and Burke gets a big time cog in the wheel. Mark my words, this guy is going to explode this year.
John Mitchell... eh ..... John Mitchell. Dont know if we need this guy, time will tell, you bet he is on probation this year, we will see what happens.
Now Rumors in Leaf land, is that are certainly not in on Kovalchuck. I admit I drool abit at the thought of seeig this guy in a Lefs jersey, but, I believe a balanced roster is what will bring the Leafs sucess.
Leafs are definately going to move Kaberle... L.A seems to be where he is most sought after and they have a few players like Brown, Simmonds, and Schenn that the leafs would like to have.
I would love to see a few left wingers or a hulking center. Grabs can move to the wing if we can grab a centerman, and apparently versteeg can play all three positions as well. I think leafs will sign a few more players as well.
Afinogenov has been rumored to bring in a little offense, Torres, Johnston, I like Sutton in the blue and White, a monster on defence. Time will tell...wait and see, but we are headed in the right direction.
Toronto will also face a Cap penalty.... bonuses exceeded 7.5%
