Burke Playing With Fire .... Plus Frolov Note

Brian Burke is a smart man, and has really put his mark on the Leafs over the past few seasons. His greatest or worst move could be made in the next few weeks. What was thought to happen at that draft in L.A has still yet to transpire. Could Burke be playing with fire.

Burke is admament to get the return he wants, which according to TSN is a Top 6 Forward and a pick, and he is really waiting it out to get just that. The question is will he. Certainly time is on his time isnt it.

There are just three short weeks until Kaberles clause goes back into place and he remains a leaf for the upcoming season. His agent says Kaberle wishes to remain a leaf,I just cant imagine a guy who is being publicly shopped and constantly talked about in the media in regards to what return he would bring back, would even think of resigning.

It is speculated that there are 5 top destinations from San Jose to Columbus, and names being floated like Neal, Brassard, Clowe and Simmonds. Time will indeed tell where he will go, and until that time comes, we will axiously speculate the great Kaberle debate.

I personally think it is a matter of when! Burke is using the media as an outlet to drive up the price, to seem as if he has the upper hand, and I do believe he can create a bidding war for the all-star vetern defenseman, I also think he will not look to rob the bank but get a fair return for Kaberle.

This can be the biggest move Brian makes, or could be the biggest disaster.TSN also reports that it willbe the first of August before we find out exactly what will happen with number 15.

On a side note Frolov is close to signing a 1yr 800'000-1'000'000 contract... pretty fair price for Frolov. If you ask me, I think burke should take a flyer on that price and term.

During the early stages of the 2008–09 NHL season, his first in the NHL, Kulemin found chemistry on a line with teammates Niklas Hagman and Mikhail Grabovski. Near the end of the season, after the trade of Leafs forward Nik Antropov, Kulemin was used mainly on a line with Grabovski and Alexei Ponikarovsky. [2] In a game against the Montreal Canadiens on March 21, 2009, soon after the line was created, Kulemin posted a career-high three points (one goal and two assists) in a 5–2 Toronto win.[3] It has been noted that Ponikarovsky, a Ukrainian, has helped Kulemin become more comfortable in North America by translating and serving as a mentor on and off the ice.[4]

Kulemin's first NHL goal occurred in his first NHL game, against the Detroit Red Wings, on goaltender Chris Osgood, in Toronto's 2008–09 season opener on October 9, 2008. The goal ended up as the game winner in a 3–2 Leafs win

Unbelievable 1st goal in the NHL for Bozak

Meet the Leafs : Tyler Bozak

NHL Draft undrafted
Playing career 2009–present

Bozak started playing in the British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL) for the Victoria Salsa (later known as the Victoria Grizzlies) in the 2004–05 season.[1] He spent three seasons in the BCHL with the Victoria franchise. In his final season, Bozak recorded 128 points (45 goals and 83 assists), and was awarded the Brett Hull Trophy as the league's Top Scorer.[2]

On December 11, 2006, the University of Denver Pioneers announced that Bozak had signed a letter of intent to play hockey for the school.[3] He joined the Pioneers for the 2007-08 season. During his freshman year with the club, Bozak played in all 41 games and led the team in scoring with 34 points (18 goals and 16 assists).[1] He was second in the country with five shorthanded goals.[4] During the season, Bozak was named the Red Baron Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) Rookie of the Week four times and was named the Hockey Commissioner's Association (HCA) Rookie of the Month for December.[4] At the end of the season, Bozak was named to the All-WCHA third team and to the All-WCHA Rookie Team.[4]

Heading into his sophomore season with the Pioneers, Bozak was named to the College Hockey News Preseason All-America Team.[4] On December 12, he tore the meniscus in his left knee in a game against Minnesota State, and this caused him to miss more than half of the Pioneers season.[4] After the season, Bozak was named to the All-WCHA Academic Team.[4]

[edit] Professional
After his sophomore season, Bozak was a heavily pursued free agent. He signed a two-year, entry level contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs on April 3, 2009.[5] Exact financial details of the contract were not released, but it has been rumoured to be worth close to $4 million per season if all performance bonuses are reached.[6] Bozak did not suit up for the Leafs at the end of the 2008-09 season, instead taking the time to further rehabilitate his injured knee.[7]

Bozak attended the Maple Leafs training camp prior to the 2009-10 season. He had a strong training camp, but because of salary cap concerns, he was sent down to the Leafs American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate Toronto Marlies. Maple Leafs head coach Ron Wilson admitted that Bozak had a strong camp, "He'll probably have to go down because of numbers. Based on the way he played in training camp, he's certainly worthy of playing in the NHL, but we may not have room at the beginning."[8] Bozak was called up by the Toronto Maple Leafs on October 13, 2009,[9] and made his NHL debut the same night against the Colorado Avalanche. During this game, he recorded his first NHL point, an assist on a goal by Francois Beauchemin.[10] After playing one game, Bozak was returned to the AHL's Marlies on October 15, 2009.[9] Bozak was called up by the Maple Leafs again on January 12, 2010.[9] On January 14, 2010, Bozak scored his first NHL goal against the Philadelphia Flyers.[11]

Brad Richards for Kaberle anyone??

I have heard this rumble a few months ago, but checking online, there seems to be more and more talks of a Kaberle for Brad Richards trade.

I have always thought that with the departure of Zubov that Dallas was a prime destinaton for Kaberle. There were talks at the draft the the leafs were interested in aquiring one of two Dallas centers. Either Richards or Ribero.

The problem in Dallas is an internal cap from the owners, they are facing financial difficulties and from what I have read and listened to, could be on the market for sale.

This is why the Brad Richards deal makes sense. He is young enough to play in Toronto, he is definately skilled enough to play in Toronto, but does he want to play in Toronto?? He has a NTC.... he waved it to go to Dallas. Would he wave it to come to Toronto???

Brad is on the last year of a 7 + million dollar contract, he can be signed to an extension this year, and I believe he will fetch a good return but a more reasonable one at this stage in his career. He had an amazing season last year, and he is the assist man Toronto could use to feather the pass to Kessel. This could be a perfect marriage.

Richards would have an oppritunity to play for an organization in his home nation, a team on the turn around, and run by premier management and coaching.

Brad could be the difference the Leafs need to become a real contender and offensive threat.

August 15 the NTC goes back into effect for Kaberle , I feel the longer this saga continues, the less leverage Burke has. He is a smart man, and will get the best return for the Leafs.

No Sweatt Off My Back

Official.....

Bill Sweatt will not be a member of the Maple Leafs. Brian Burk pulled the deal off the table when he signed Mueller to a 2 year EL contract last week. And I have to admit I was excited for this prospect to get a crack at the lineup, but he got cocky, and I love Burkes no nonsense approach to the way he GM's.

You dont wanna be here.... Dont let the door hit ya on the way out.

Playing career 2010–present

Nazem Kadri (born October 6, 1990) is a Canadian ice hockey player who currently plays for the London Knights of the Ontario Hockey League. He was drafted by the Toronto Maple Leafs seventh overall in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft. Kadri has also played for the Kitchener Rangers. He won the J. Ross Robertson Cup with the Rangers, and played in the 2008 Memorial Cup, losing in the final to the Spokane Chiefs. On February 8, 2010, he became the fourth player of Lebanese descent to play in the NHL, after John Hanna, Alain Nasreddine and Ed Hatoum. Kadri represented Canada at the 2010 World Junior Championships, where the team won the silver medal.

Kadri started his Ontario Hockey League career with the Kitchener Rangers after being selected in the first round, 18th overall of the 2006 OHL Priority Selection.[1] During his second season in the OHL, he played 68 games scoring 25 goals and adding 40 assists.[2] During the playoffs, Kadri helped the Rangers to an OHL Championship and a berth in the Memorial Cup final, where they lost to the Spokane Chiefs of the WHL.[3] After the 2007–08 season was complete, Kadri was traded by the Rangers to the London Knights for a package of draft picks.[4] Kadri played the 2008–09 season for his hometown Knights. He played in 56 games, where he scored 25 goals and added 53 assists.[2] Kadri lost time during the 2008–09 season when he suffered a broken jaw.[5] Kadri was selected to play for Team OHL in the ADT Canada Russia Challenge, but was unable to participate due to this injury.[6] Kadri was invited to Team Canada's selection camp for the 2009 World Junior Championships, but did not make the team.[5] Also during the 2008–09 season, Kadri was chosen to play in the OHL All-Star Classic, where he suited up for the Western Conference and scored a goal.[7]

After the season was complete, he was drafted by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the first round (7th overall) of the 2009 NHL Entry Draft.[8] Kadri signed a 3-year, entry level contract with the club on July 6, 2009.[9]

Kadri attended training camp with the Maple Leafs prior to the 2009–10 season. He played in 6 pre-season games with the club, where he scored 3 goals and added 2 assists. Coach Ron Wilson had said prior to training camp that Kadri would need to be one of the team's top 6 forwards in order to make the club. Kadri was returned to the Knights prior to the start of the NHL regular season.[10]

After being cut from the Maple Leafs, Kadri returned to play for the Knights in the OHL. He was selected to play for Team OHL in the 2009 Subway Super Series (renamed from the ADT Canada Russia Challenge).[11] Kadri was also selected to represent the Western Conference in the 2009–10 OHL All-Star Classic, his second appearance in the league's All-Star Game in as many seasons.[12] On March 30, 2010 Kadri was named the CHL Player of the Week, after recording 9 points (2 goals, 7 assists) in 3 games.[13] The OHL named Kadri the league's Player of the Month for April 2010, a month in which he recorded 26 points (9 goals, 17 assists) in 10 games

Woikins Thoughts:

Does he stick this year?? I hope so. I love Kadris determination, and drive. He has one single focus and that is to make the Leafs line up next season.

Burke has publicly stated that they are looking for wingers, which shows that he believes in Kadri, Bozak and Grabovski.

I do believe he will be given every opritunity to get in the line up, and I do believe he will. He wants it too badly!!

Could Simon Gagne Be a Leaf??

According to reports, the leafs could be one of three possible destinations for Simon Gagne.

But Should Burke pull the trigger on a deal to bring in Gagne to play on the Leafs?

Simon is 6-0 / 195 lb and plays the left wing. He earns 5.25 and is in the last year of his contract. Gagne has struggled with injury over the past 3-4 seasons, but has been productive when in the lineup.

Last year he played 58 games and had 40 pts, the year previous he had 74 pts in 79 games, so he is truely an offensive threat when healthy.

I am really on the fence with this one, I think it comes down to how they aquire him. I think teams know Philly is in a vulnerable position with their cap after signing Zheredev, and Philly may have to waive the Vet. if that happens the Leafs are second on the waiver wire behind Edmonton. I could see the Leafs picking him up this way, Moving Kabs for lower played prospect or prospects, and Finger getting demoted to Marlies.

I cant see who or what Burke would be able to or willing to move in a trade for Gagne, unless he could throw Finger in the deal as well.... maybe Grabovski and Finger for Gagne?? I dunno, Flyers can take back salary, unless they settle for a mid pick in the draft. Just doesnt mesh....

Some reports suggest Burke looks to a 3 way to make it happen, But Burke shouldnt overpay for a salary dump, especially when there are rumors of Gagne hitting the waiver wire.

Time will tell, the next few weeks should be interesting in Leaf land and there should be some movement soon, I am reading the Kaberle drama will come together after the Kovalchuk decision.

What do you think? Should Burke make Simon Gagne to the Leafs a reality or Pass?

What Mike Brown will bring to the table

Meet The Leafs : Mike Brown

NHL Draft 159th overall, 2004
Vancouver Canucks
Playing career 2005–present

Before attending the University of Michigan for two years, Brown was a member of the US National Development Team Program, competing in the North American Hockey League (NAHL). After a 13-point freshman year with Michigan in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA), he was drafted 159th overall by the Vancouver Canucks in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft. Brown became one of two Mike Browns to have been part of the Canucks organization and was often mistaken for the latter, a forward who left the Canucks in 2002.[1] Following his sophomore season, he was signed to a pro contract with the Canucks and chose to forego his last two years of college hockey.

Brown with the Vancouver Canucks. In his pro rookie season in 2005–06 with the Manitoba Moose, the Canucks' American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate, he recorded 15 points in 73 games. In 2007–08, he received his first NHL call-up, playing 19 games for the Canucks. Brown scored his first NHL goal on December 2, 2007 against the Minnesota Wild in just his third game with the Canucks, deflecting a point shot from defenceman Lukas Krajicek in a 2–1 loss.[2] He was sent back down to the Moose on February 7, 2008.

On February 4, 2009, Brown was traded by the Canucks to the Anaheim Ducks for Nathan McIver.[3]

On May 1, 2009, Brown was ejected from Game 1 of the Western Conference Semifinals after a questionable hit on then Red Wings forward Jiri Hudler, who was left dazed and bloodied on the ice. Brown did return to the series, which the Red Wings ultimately won in seven games.

In the 2009–10 season, Brown played in a career high 75 games posting six goals and recording 106 penalty minutes. On June 26, 2010, he was traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for the Leafs' fifth round pick, number 122 overall, in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft.[4]

Leafs Prospects From The 2010 Draft

Brad Ross , LW – Portland Winterhawks (WHL)
2nd round, 43rd overall
6’1, 175lbs

It was reported the Leafs had Brad Ross pegged as a first-round talent, and after he slipped into their hands in the second, they could not pass on the opportunity to select him.

Considered one of the hardest players to play against in the WHL, Ross brings energy and grit to the mix, which sometimes makes it easy for his offensive prowess to be overlooked. An in-your-face forward who is relentless on the ice, his agitating presence helps create offense for his linemates. He thrives in the role and should continue to frustrate opponents at the junior level. He will need to add strength to carry it over to the next level though.

Ross played in 71 games for the Winterhawks, registering 27 goals, 41 assists, a +22 rating, and 203 penalty minutes. In the playoffs, the 18-year-old posted two goals, seven assists, and 19 penalty minutes. He also played for Team Cherry at the 2010 CHL Top Prospects Game.

Should he continue to develop at the rate he has been, Ross has the potential to be a super-pest with good all-around ability.

Greg McKegg, C – Erie Otters (OHL)
3rd round, 62nd overall
6’0, 190lbs

Playing on Erie’s top line with Zack Torquato and Mike Cazzola, Greg McKegg had a breakout season for the Otters in 2009-10, scoring 37 goals and posting 85 points through 67 games. He also went from a -13 rating in 2008-09 to a +18 rating in 2009-10. All while dealing with a sprained ACL in the preseason and spending most of the year working to get back up to speed. In the playoffs he played in four games for the Otters, picking up two goals and one assist against the powerhouse Windsor Spitfires.

Capable of lining up at center and wing, McKegg is an offensive catalyst with a good mind for the game. He excelled on the special teams for Erie this past season scoring 16 of his 37 goals on the power-play. The forward has deceptive hands and the capacity to score goals in a variety of ways. Although not an overly physical player, McKegg does not shy away from contact.

McKegg has top-six potential, and while he has put up great numbers at the OHL level this past season, it is unlikely that he will make the Maple Leafs as an 18-year-old out of camp. Two more seasons in the OHL is not out of the question, but his position with the club will be re-evaluated after the 2010-11 season.

Sondre Olden , RW – MODO J20 (SWE)
3rd round, 79th overall
6’3, 172lbs

Norwegian Sondre Olden made the move from his home country to Sweden’s junior league in 2009-10. Initially with MODO J18, Olden dominated the competition scoring 11 goals and 15 assists in only eight games. He also continued his domination of the U18 circuit at the international level, scoring a mind-blowing 22 points in five games with Norway. He was even a part of Norway’s U20 team as a 17-year-old and put up solid numbers in three goals and one assist through five games.

Later, as a member of MODO J20, Olden was almost as productive, finishing third on the team in scoring. He was by far the most productive 17-year-old on a team led by a large number of 19-year-old players. He scored only seven goals, but assisted on 20 others for 27 points in 32 games.

Olden is a player with great size, but who at the moment is extremely lanky. He moves very well for his size and is a threat at all three forward positions. The 17-year-old is also an effective two-way player.

Far from a finished product, Olden needs to add significant strength and weight to his frame, and improve his shot.

As one of the youngest players in the 2010 draft he will need some time to grow into his body and is multiple years away before his development can be re-evaluated. At the moment he should be considered a project with the potential for high payout.

Petter Granberg , D РSkellefte̴ J20 (SWE)
4th round, 116th overall
6’3, 200lbs

A defensive defender with very good size, Petter Granberg has both defensive acumen and a strong first-pass. He plays a very smart defensive game and is rarely caught out of position. He also does a very good job containing opposition forwards in the defensive zone due to his large wingspan and solid positioning.

As a member of Skelleftea in the J20 SuperElit league, Granberg scored two goals and seven assists for nine points in 40 games. He also picked up one goal in four playoff games. In the U-18 World Junior Championships, he had one assist in six games for Sweden.

Compared in style to current Maple Leaf defender Carl Gunnarsson, Granberg is said to have a bit more of a physical edge to his game. He is expected to become an even more dominant defender as he grows into his large frame. Like Olden, Granberg is among the youngest drafted in 2010.

He has a contract in place with Skelleftea that lasts through 2012-2013 and will likely fulfill it. He should receive a full-time role in the SEL for the up-coming season which would aid in his development.

Sam Carrick, C – Brampton Battalion (OHL)
5th round, 144th overall
6’0, 188lbs

A player selected right out of the Maple Leafs backyard, Sam Carrick is not overly big but surprisingly strong on his skates. He has great two-way ability and plays a physical and fearless game on the ice.

Offensively, Carrick can be very dangerous with the puck in both scoring and playmaking. Consistency can be an issue however as the 18-year-old often tries to do too much. He is at his best when he plays a simple, yet energized two-way game. A player who exudes character, Carrick is also not afraid to drop the gloves despite not being the best of fighters.

In his second season with Brampton, the center saw his ice-time increase as he began to establish himself in a top-six role. He was second in team scoring with 21 goals and 21 assists in 66 games. A great accomplishment considering Brampton was the lowest scoring team in the league with only 167 goals scored.

Carrick was a key player for Brampton this past season and should soon become one of the faces of the Battalion organization.

Daniel Brodin , LW РDjurg̴rden (SEL)
5th round, 146th overall
6’1, 172lbs

After being passed over in both 2008 and 2009, the Maple Leafs selected the 20-year-old forward in the fifth round of the 2010 entry draft.

Daniel Brodin is a high energy winger who brings a ton of tenacity and speed each game he plays. He is neither intimidated easily nor afraid to battle in the dirty areas of the ice. Likely never to be depended on for his offensive ability, Brodin could be a quality checking line forward with some added strength.

Brodin split the 2009-10 season between Djurgardens' J20 team and the Elite squad. In 20 games with the junior affiliate, he posted five goals, two assists, and 12 penalty minutes. In 30 games for the Elite squad, the forward tallied two goals, three assists, and 26 penalty minutes. In 16 playoff games for the Elite squad, Brodin picked up no points and two penalty minutes. He was also selected to play for Sweden's WJC Under-20 squad, where he netted three goals and added two assists for five points.

At 20 years old and with a season of SEL play under his belt, Brodin is more NHL ready than the other members of the Leafs 2010 draft class. He is currently under contract with Djurgården for one more season and could join the Toronto organization in 2011-2012.

Josh Nicholls , C – Saskatoon Blades (WHL)
7th round, 182nd overall
6’2, 172lbs

With their last selection in the 2010 draft, the Maple Leafs selected Saskatoon Blades forward Josh Nicholls, who was ranked 90th by Central Scouting.

An interesting combination of size and speed, what makes Nicholls so valuable is his versatility. A two-way forward who is a solid forechecker with some offensive ability, he can lineup both at center and on the right wing. In 2009-10 he played on the PK for Saskatoon and projects to be that type of forward at the pro level.

In his second season with the Blades, Nicholls posted 18 goals and 30 assists in 71 games, almost double his total from the previous season. He also posted a +19 rating and finished fifth on his team in scoring.

A long-term project with intriguing upside, the 18-year-old will likely spend the next two seasons in the WHL growing into his frame and continuing to develop his two-way game. Nicholls will have the opportunity to take a prominent offensive role with Saskatoon next year as their two leading scorers no longer have junior eligibility.

Sharks in on Kaberle

Well the sharks could be in the running and leading the race for the coveted Kaberle. This makes alot of sense as the sharks have to be desperate to make another stab at the cup after another dissapointing playoffs.

They may be so desperate to give Toronto exactly who they want for one full year with Kaberle. And they have some nice assests.

The names being thrown out there are Setagouchi and Clowe. Setagouchi is another RW and I just cant imagine if available, Burke would pass on Clowe at 6-2 225 pounds on the very weak Leaf LW. Clowe is an animal, and a real Burke like player who managed to put together 50 plus pts last year. Top six forward.

There is a seperate rumor that has the sharks moving Thorton to get into the Kovalchuk sweepstakes, and the rumored destination is Toronto.

What would it take to make it happen... I dunno,if he is a dump maybe not as much as you would think.....

Brian Burke, president and general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs has agreed on the terms with free agent goalie to a 2 year entry-level contract. He is expected to begin the 2010-2011 season with the Toronto Marlies in the AHL.

As a younger player, Rynnäs was never considered a prime talent and was, for example, never drafted in the NHL. After becoming over-aged to play in the Ässät Junior team, Rynnäs had serious trouble in finding himself a team, ending up in the Finnish 3rd division.

However, Ässät signed him for the 2009-2010 season and, after impressive performances in the pre-season games, Rynnäs got more and more responsibility and ended up becoming Ässät's number one goalkeeper and a fan favourite. In the end of the season, several NHL teams showed interest, and Rynnäs eventually chose Toronto.

News and Note: Tucker , Smyth , Schenn

Allrighty folks, it has certainly been dry as the Kovalchuck saga continues to roll on.

From what I am reading, the signing of Kovy where ever it may be is going to trigger movement and lots of it.

Some Leafs tidbits I am hearing,is that L.A rally struck out this offseason, are looking to tango with the Burke for Kaberle. There is rumor that Captain Canada Ryan Smyth and Brayden Schenn could be coming to Toronto for Kabs and Grabovski. Wayne Simmonds is being talked about alot as well. I think with L.A officially out of the Kovalchuck sweepstakes, they may not be as desperate to make such deals.

Dallas and Anahiem are still good fits for a trade with the buds.

Tucker will not be returning to the leafs, wold have been funny though seeing as how the leafs are still paying 1 mill for buyout.

Keep you posted on any interesting news...

NHL Draft 134th overall, 2004
Boston Bruins
Playing career 2006–present

Versteeg was drafted 134th overall in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft by the Boston Bruins. After a four-year Western Hockey League (WHL) career (spanning from 2002–03 to 2005–06 and spent with the Lethbridge Hurricanes, Kamloops Blazers and Red Deer Rebels) During his time with the Lethbridge Hurricanes, he played with former Chicago Blackhawks teammate Brent Seabrook for three seasons. Versteeg made his professional debut, playing in the final 13 games of the 2005–06 season with Boston's American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate, the Providence Bruins.

He remained with Providence for the beginning of 2006–07 before being traded by Boston on February 3, 2007, along with a conditional draft pick, to the Chicago Blackhawks for Brandon Bochenski.[1] As a result, he moved within the AHL to Chicago's minor league affiliate, the Norfolk Admirals. Versteeg then played for the Rockford IceHogs in 2007–08, as Chicago switched its AHL affiliation. He made his NHL debut that season as he was called up for a total of 13 games, recording 2 goals and 2 assists.

Versteeg played his first full season with the Blackhawks in 2008–09. On January 1, 2009, he scored the opening goal of the 2009 Winter Classic held at Wrigley Field against the Detroit Red Wings. Finishing the season with 22 goals and 53 points, second in rookie scoring to Bobby Ryan of the Anaheim Ducks, he was nominated for the Calder Memorial Trophy as rookie of the year along with Ryan and goaltender Steve Mason of the Columbus Blue Jackets for his efforts.[2] Mason ended up winning the Calder.

Versteeg's entry-level contract expired after the 2008–09 season, which would typically have made him a restricted free agent. However, a clerical error led to speculation Versteeg and several of his teammates could become unrestricted free agents. The NHLPA filed a grievance on the players' behalf, but on July 8, 2009, he re-signed with the Blackhawks to a three-year contract, worth nearly US$9 million.[3]

On June 9, 2010, Versteeg won the Stanley Cup with the Chicago Blackhawks.

On June 30, 2010, Versteeg was traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs along with the rights to prospect Bill Sweatt in exchange for forwards Viktor Stalberg, Chris DiDomenico and Philippe Paradis.

NHL Draft 21st overall, 2001

Playing career 2002–present

Armstrong was drafted by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the first round of the 2001 NHL Entry Draft as the 21st pick overall.

In the 2005–06 season, he made his NHL debut, and had a superb rookie campaign, in which he played 47 games tallying 40 points (16G, 24A) and was a team-high plus-15.

Armstrong had three overtime goals for the Penguins in the 2006–07 season, beating Kari Lehtonen of the Atlanta Thrashers, Ed Belfour of the Florida Panthers, and Henrik Lundqvist of the New York Rangers. The Pittsburgh Penguins and Armstrong avoided an arbitration hearing, in 2006–2007 off-season, by re-signing him to two year deal that pays $1.2 million annually.[1]

Armstrong became very close friends with former teammate Sidney Crosby while playing for the Penguins.

He was a member of the 2007 Canadian IIHF World Championship-winning team. His only goal of the tournament was the game-winning goal in the gold medal game against Finland in Moscow, which Canada won 4–2.

Pittsburgh traded Armstrong on February 26, 2008 to the Atlanta Thrashers along with Angelo Esposito, Erik Christensen, and a first round pick in exchange for Marián Hossa and Pascal Dupuis.[2] He then scored 11 points in 18 games to finish out the 2007–08 season with the Thrashers.

On July 16, 2009 he re-signed with the Thrashers to a one-year $2.4 million contract. He served as one of the team's alternate captains during the 2009–10 season.

On July 1, 2010, he signed as an unrestricted free agent with the Toronto Maple Leafs for $3 million per year for 3 years.[3]

Meet The Leaf : Brett Lebda

Lebda attended Buffalo Grove High School for 2 years, where he also played golf and volleyball. He then relocated to Ann Arbor, Michigan, where he was a participant on the USA National Under-18 Team. He graduated from Ann Arbor Pioneer High School.

Lebda played college hockey at the University of Notre Dame. He was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Detroit Red Wings in 2004, and was assigned to the Grand Rapids Griffins, the Wings' minor league affiliate in the American Hockey League. Lebda was unable to suit up for a NHL game until the 2005–06 NHL season due to the NHL lockout. He became the first Red Wing since Greg Johnson in 1993 to score his first NHL goal on opening night. He played in 46 games that regular season and all of Detroit's six opening round playoff games.

He played in 76 games during the 2006–07 NHL season to go with 12 games that playoff year. He set a career high in points with 18, and participated in the only fight of his career when he squared off against Mikael Holmqvist.

In the 2007–08 NHL season, Lebda suited up for 78 games, as well as 19 playoff games as the Red Wings won the 2008 Stanley Cup.

Due to sub-par play to start the 2008–09 NHL season, Lebda found himself a healthy scratch for three straight games before returning to the lineup.

During his career, Lebda was often paired with Chris Chelios, a fellow Chicago suburban native who is 20 years his elder. While growing up in suburban Chicago, Lebda considered Chelios an idol, and modeled his game after his.

On July 7, 2010 Lebda signed a two year contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Burke back to business....

After resigning Kulemin and Mitchell Burke departed from work announcing they would be back to the grind on Tuesday to address a few potential moves and signings.

This should be.... i am going to even say will be a busy week for Burke and company. It is expected that Kaberle is finally moved, and no better time then when he is really worth the most. I have heard everything from a Dallas trade including James Neal, Brad Richards, or Mike you can keep him Ribero, to Anahiems Bobby Ryan. L.A keeps popping up, but unless Brayden Schenn is in the mix... Simmonds and Brown are both right wingers, and with Kessel , Versteeg, and Armstrong in the mix, I would say we are good on the right side.We need some scoring on the let wing and some size and playmaking up the middle.

I personally believe that Dallas and Anahiem make the best sense here. With both team having serious departures on D this year , one has to think they are the best possible fits here. But time will tell, and I believe that time is upon us. Two years of rumors will come to an end, and Toronto will get a marquee player in return.

A part of me is saddened that the kaberle saga is coming to an end.... but I am excited to see what he can fetch.

Other notes: Burke has stated that he has the resources to fetch 2 more top line players..... Schenn is being tossed around the web, to either sweeten a deal, or bring in another young superstar on the rise. Schenn may be the piece to bring Bobby Ryan to Toronto.

And Kovy... make up your mind..... this guy is playing games at this point.

Tucker Back to Toronto????

Interesting huh???

Apparently Burke says that he had calls from two ex-leafs since free agency began. ONe would have to think Poni is liking what he sees in Toronto, and the other rumored to be no other than Darcy Tucker.

Darcy Tucker would be a nice fit at a intro contract on the leafs squad, and might bring a vet pressence in the locker room, much like Geurin in Pittsburgh. He would be a role player for sure but could be intersting fit if he could return to his old pesky form.

Kulemin and Mitchell

Well it has been a pro active few days in leafland. First the trade for Versteeg and Sweat, the signing of Colby Armstrong followed, and today the Leafs announce that they have resigned Kulemin and John Mitchell to respectable contracts.

Versteeg is a great pick up for Burke, and fits what he trying to do by bringing in young players who can play now. I think Vertseeg has prooven himself on a deep Chicago club wih limited ice time, their is potential for him to really flourish in top 6 minutes he will recieve in Toronto. He is a pesky forward with an offensive upside.

Sweat who came in the deal, from what I have read about him, could potentially make the team in the fall. He is a good two way forward but I feel as burke continues to tweak the roster over the next few weeks, he will probably be a marlie.

Armstrong was a given, he is the absolute perfect fit in Toronto. Young, tough, great open ice hitter, and a super pest. A friend of mine and I were discussing since Tucker we have not had this type of player, and that is why he is getting 3 mil. He can possibly sneak into the second line, but most likely a third line guy used in penalty kill sittuations.

Kulemin, was a must sign player for the Leafs, I remember Ron Wilson stating he is a train out there, and you can se it, he is always in on the puck, and tough on players. He really hits guys out there, and you can tell he doesnt bounce off guys, he hurts them. He can score, and I believe there is more to be seen with Kulemin. I like him, and he is a deal at just shy of 2.5 over two years, he gets a chance to prove he is worth the buck, and Burke gets a big time cog in the wheel. Mark my words, this guy is going to explode this year.

John Mitchell... eh ..... John Mitchell. Dont know if we need this guy, time will tell, you bet he is on probation this year, we will see what happens.

Now Rumors in Leaf land, is that are certainly not in on Kovalchuck. I admit I drool abit at the thought of seeig this guy in a Lefs jersey, but, I believe a balanced roster is what will bring the Leafs sucess.

Leafs are definately going to move Kaberle... L.A seems to be where he is most sought after and they have a few players like Brown, Simmonds, and Schenn that the leafs would like to have.

I would love to see a few left wingers or a hulking center. Grabs can move to the wing if we can grab a centerman, and apparently versteeg can play all three positions as well. I think leafs will sign a few more players as well.

Afinogenov has been rumored to bring in a little offense, Torres, Johnston, I like Sutton in the blue and White, a monster on defence. Time will tell...wait and see, but we are headed in the right direction.

Toronto will also face a Cap penalty.... bonuses exceeded 7.5%

Leaf Notes

Great news last night for Leaf fans, Burke aquired a top six forward in Versteeg. He should be a second line winger as Kessel is ahead of him on the depth chart.
This is a great aquisition, coming fresh off a stanley cup win , he knows what it takes to win a championship and will be looked to for a bit of leadership.

Sweat a second round draft pick is projected as a smart two-way forward who is a few years off of playing in the NHL.

Leafs send Stalberg, Didaminco , and Paradis the other way. Chicago was looking for a first at the drafy, so I think Burke made a smart deal here that will be good for both sides.

There is a rumor floating that Burke would love to land Brayden Schenn from L.A. The only reason I post this, is that there were talks that Toronto was after Simmons or Brown from L.A, with Kaberle being the prize from Toronto. Maybe talks have shifted to the draft pick Burke publicly coooed over two years ago.

Kulemin talks are close and far away according to two major sources in Dreger and Kypreos. Dreger says Kulemins car is more money than the gap between the parties.

Should be a fun day, I will be iterested to se who lands in Toronto today, and if Burke will pull the trigger on a few more deals.

Stay Tuned...
